 Oracle Database 11g on Windows new World Record: July 8th, 2008
Oracle has announced a new world record TPC-C benchmark for Oracle Database 11g Standard Edition One running on Windows. With this result, Oracle now holds the top three record benchmark positions in the Top Ten TPC-C price/performance category.  Achieving 97,083 transactions per minute with a price/performance of $.68/tpmC, Oracle Database 11g Standard Edition One running on a Windows-based Dell PowerEdge 2900 server with one Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.66 GHz processor, delivered the best price-per-transaction- per-minute ever achieved with the TPC-C benchmark. Oracle continues to lead in the TPC-C Price/Performance category with the top results on Windows and Linux.

 Oracle SQL Developer - updated Statement of Direction: July 2nd, 2008
Oracle has released an updated Statement of Direction for SQL Developer, downloads of which passed the 1 million mark in May, 2008. The next release of Oracle SQL Developer provides complete graphical, logical and physical data modeling delivered as an optional extension to SQL Developer. Customers who do not select the data modeling option will be able to continue to use the base SQL Developer product. The base product will continue to benefit from further updates, which will include unit testing and improved database support.

Organisations are adopting Oracle SQL Developer, a free database development and migration tool, to simplify development cycles and reduce the need to buy third-party tools for developing and debugging SQL and PL/SQL code.

 Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Beta. May 14th, 2008

With Service Pack 1, Visual Studio 2008 introduces a large assortment of new features for targeting Windows, Office and the Web.  Developers building .NET applications will enjoy improved performance in the WPF designer, new components for Visual Basic and Visual C++ as well as an MFC-based Office 2007 Ribbon. Web developers will see continued improvement in the client-side script tooling including JavaScript IntelliSense.  Full support for SQL Server 2008, the ADO.NET Entity Framework and performance improvements for the IDE are also included.

The .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 delivers more controls, a streamlined setup, improved start-up performance and powerful new graphics features for client development and rich data scaffolding, improved AJAX support and other improvements for Web development.  Additionally, it introduces the ADO.NET Entity Framework and ADO.NET Data Services, which simplify data access code in applications by providing an extensible, conceptual model for data from any data source and enabling this model to closely reflect business requirements.

    The Critical Patch Update for April 2008 was released on April 15, 2008. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible. The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information.      Statement of Direction for Oracle Database on MS Windows Server 2008
    Oracle has announced a Statement of Direction that provides a road map for Oracle Database running on Microsoft Windows Server 2008.  The latest 2008 edition of Microsoft Windows Server was released in February.

     Organisations Ease Web Application Development with Application Express 3.1
    In this announcement, Oracle describes how organisations are using Application Express 3.1 to rapidly develop data driven Web applications.  Using only a Web browser and limited programming experience, developers can build and deploy professional applications that are both fast and secure.  Application Express is integrated with all editions of Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Database 10g.

     Real Application Clusters on Windows adoption
    An increasing number of businesses are adopting Oracle's Real Application Clusters (RAC) to improve performance, reliability and scalability of critical applications.  With this news announcement, Oracle provides detail about an important adoption of this technology on the Windows platform.  TALX Corporation has deployed RAC on an Oracle Database 10g on Windows configuration.

    Oracle today announced that eWEEK Labs recognised Oracle Database 11g as one of "The Most Important Products of 2007."   Oracle Database 11g delivers more than 400 new features to ease everyday challenges such as rapid data growth, high availability, managing all of an enterprise's information and managing change.  Its grid computing capabilities offer high performance, scalability and reliability with unique capabilities designed to help accelerate the change towards consolidated enterprise grids.

     ODAC 11.1.0.6.10 beta now available
    The 11g beta release of Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC)  is now available for download.  ODAC consists of a number of components:  The Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) allows .NET applications to access Oracle Database.  Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio (ODT) allow .NET developers to work with Oracle Database from within the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE.  Oracle Provider for ASP.NET provides additional facilities specifically related to ASP development.  For further details about the new features in ODAC 11g beta, click here...  To download from O-Zone, click here...   

     Visual Studio 2008 available end November. Nov 7th, 2007
    The next version of Microsoft's .NET IDE, Visual Studio 2008, will be available at the end of November. The release will include the latest version of the .NET Framework, 3.5.  Microsoft made the announcement at the TechEd 2007 developer event being held in Barcelona, Spain.  Both VS 2008 (codenamed "Orcas") and .NET Framework 3.5 are currently at the beta 2 stage, so this provides a short window for Microsoft to prepare them for release.  A spokesman for Microsoft said that both VS 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 will be available for download on the release date and that "retail availability will occur soon thereafter."  Key highlights in VS 2008:
    • Language Integrated Query (LINQ) will make access to databases and XML faster and more efficient.
    • Programming for Office 2007 will be enhanced with new tools, including some that address collaboration.   These will be included with VS Professional.
    • Support for multiple versions of .NET will allow developers to build applications for .NET Framework versions going back to 2.0, without leaving the IDE.
    • Sync Framework will allow developers to build ecosystems that integrate any application with any data from any store using any protocol over any network.
    • J# will not be included as Microsoft has dropped support for it.

     Oracle Database 11g available on Microsoft Windows platform
    Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle Database 11g on the Microsoft Windows platform.  Oracle Database 11g is optimised for Windows platforms and services.  Administrators can take advantage of new Windows-specific features including database backup and recovery using Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service as well as enhancements in Active Directory and Kerberos integration. New features in Oracle Database 11g and enhanced integration with Windows offer a fast, reliable and secure foundation for mission-critical applications. Oracle's recent world record for price/performance with the TPC-C benchmark running Oracle Database 11g on Windows demonstrates Oracle Database's ability to cost-effectively meet the needs of businesses of all sizes without compromising performance.

    Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle  SQL Developer Release 1.2 which features new capabilities to ease the migration and consolidation of third-party databases onto Oracle Database 11g. Oracle SQL Developer is Oracle's free database development tool that helps users simplify development cycles and improve productivity of creating and debugging SQL and PL/SQL code and now migrate databases to Oracle.

    Oracle Coherence for the .NET Framework extends the power of the Oracle Coherence to .NET applications.      Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 now available. Aug 01, 2007
    The second beta of Microsoft's Visual Studio 2008 is now available for download.  It forms part of a rollout of a number of developer-related products, including an update to the .NET Framework and Silverlight.  Although the product is officially set to launch Feb 2008 (along with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008), it is expected to be finished before the end of this year.  Please visit the O-Zone download area to be connected to the Beta 2 release.

    Oracle Application Express release 3.0 went into production on March 16, 2007. An updated release, 3.0.1, has recently been released. The complete download is available via the O-Zone download page.

    Oracle today introduced Oracle Database 11g, the latest release of their flagship database. With more than 400 features, 15 million test hours and 36,000 person-months of development, Oracle claim this to be the most innovative and highest quality software product they have ever announced.

     New ODAC 11.1.0.5.10 beta features. Jun 18, 2007
    Oracle has provided a summary of the new and updated features incorporated into the beta release of Oracle Data Access Components 11.1.0.5.10. The new versions of Oracle Data Provider for .NET and Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET introduce new features that greatly simplify .NET application development using Oracle Database. Both tools incorporate significant new capabilities supporting ASP.NET (Microsoft's framework for dynamic Web sites and Web applications). Support is also provided for complex data types, allowing the creation of .NET custom types from Oracle abstract data types. Other new capabilities include User Defined Type support, Source Control integration and enhanced integration with Visual Studio 2005.

     Oracle Announces New Releases of Developer Tools for Microsoft .NET. Jun 06, 2007
    Building on its commitment to support the Microsoft .NET development platform, Oracle today announced it has released beta versions of Oracle(r) Data Provider for .NET and Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET that are expected to deliver enhanced ease of use and productivity capabilities for .NET developers using Oracle Database 10g. In conjunction with Oracle Data Provider for .NET, Oracle is also planning on introducing Oracle Providers for ASP.NET - which would integrate with ASP.NET Services to enable ASP.NET applications to transparently manage state and various other useful information within an Oracle Database.

     ODAC 2007 beta will be previewed at Tech-Ed

    Oracle will have a major presence at this years Tech-Ed in Orlando on June 4-8.  We'll post any relevant slide decks and papers on O-Zone as soon as we have them.  The .NET demo station will be of particlar interest to the O-Zone community as it will provide a first look at the upcoming release of the ODAC2007 beta.


     New releases for Vista now available. May 08, 2007
    In the past few days, Oracle has released Windows Vista compatible editions of both the 32-bit Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and Oracle Database Access Components (ODAC).  The latter provides ODP.NET 2.x on Windows Vista and also Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio.NET packaged with a new Vista friendly version of the Oracle installer.  To access these free downloads, please visit the O-Zone download page.

    Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle Application Express Release 3.0, a free tool that enables users to easily build, deploy and manage secure Web applications using only a Web browser.

     Oracle Supports W3C’s XQuery 1.0 Standard. Feb 15, 2007
    Oracle has announced support for the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) XQuery 1.0, a new standard for accessing XML data.  Oracle XQuery is included in Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Enterprise and Standard editions.

    Oracle has published a Statement of Direction for Oracle Database software and Windows Vista support.  Full Vista support for 32-bit Oracle Database 10g Release 2 is scheduled for the first quarter of this year.  For the Statement of Direction, click here....  Christian Shay, Oracle Product Manager in the .NET and Windows group says that the current 10.2.0.1 Oracle Installer (the one on all the CDs) will not run properly on Vista.  If you wish to get started with Vista now, click here to find out more about Christian's temporary work around.

     Drupal + Oracle: Inside the OraDrup Project. Jan 19, 2007
    Oracle provides details of the OraDrup project. This aims to provide users of Oracle XE with a web site content management system based on open source Drupal.  Although the project is in it's early stages, Gavriel Pedros has been able to create an API that provides impressive perfomance running on Oracle XE.

    Oracle has now issued a Statement of Direction regarding the future of the Oracle Migration Workbench.  This will help you if you're looking for guidance specifically about support for SQL Server 2005 migration.  SQL Server 2005 support will be added with the next build which will be distributed as part of either SQL Developer or JDeveloper.  Although the statement doesn't give firm dates, I've learnt the next release could be just a few months away.  To read the statement in full, click here....

    Oracle Data Access Components for Windows is now available in 64-bit.  Start using the Oracle 10g Release 2 client-side drivers in 64-bit mode.  64-bit ODAC includes the ODP.NET and Oracle Database Extensions for .NET betas, as well as OLE DB, ODBC, and Oracle Services for MTS drivers.  To download, please register with us first.
